The Best Way to Prepare Your Pets for an Emergency

When a natural disasters strike, everyone’s first priority should be to protect themselves as well as their families. Pets are an important part of your family, so ensuring that they remain safe and sound is a necessity during emergency situations. Of course, this is more difficult than watching over the rest of your family as your pet isn’t aware of what is happening around them. When the burden of protecting your pet falls on you, knowing what to do and what not to do can make a world of difference.

Preparation is key during natural disasters, especially when it comes to your pets. It’s best to have a plan ready for your pet in the event you are forced to evacuate. Since most people work, pets tend to spend a lot of time at home alone. However, they should not be left to themselves during a natural disaster or emergency situation as they can become malnourished, lost, or injured while you are away. If you do own a pet, make sure you have enough food and water on hand as, in some cases, it can take days or weeks for stores to reopen after a major storm.

It’s just as important to remember to take your pet’s ID and medical records with you during an evacuation as it is to take your own. You’ll need this information if you are not able to get back to your home after an emergency and have to resort to a hotel room or rental house.

Natural disasters can cause serious damage, but, if you prepare properly, you and your family will have a better chance of staying safe before, during, and after an event – including your pet!
